Day 2
Lima to Cusco - Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo
From Lima, we’ll board a 90-minute flight that will take you soaring over the majestic Andes Mountains, landing in Cusco, located at an elevation of 11,000 feet (3,353 meters). Upon arrival, your driver will transport you to the Sacred Valley, situated at a slightly lower altitude of 9,000 feet (2,743 meters), providing a more comfortable environment for acclimatization to the high-altitude surroundings.
The first stop on your journey is the fascinating archaeological site of Pisac. Here, you’ll take a scenic hike around the ancient Inca terraces, marveling at the agricultural ingenuity that once expanded fertile land to maximize crop production.
Next, you’ll explore the lively Pisac artisan market, a vibrant gathering spot where local vendors, dressed in colorful traditional clothing, offer their handmade crafts, fresh produce, and unique goods. This market has been a key part of the community for centuries, providing a fantastic opportunity to engage with the locals and discover the cultural richness of the region.
Following the market visit, enjoy a delicious lunch at Alqa restaurant, where the cuisine showcases the rich agricultural heritage of the Andean people. The restaurant’s dishes pay homage to pre-Hispanic nutrition practices, which were advanced for their time, demonstrating the wisdom of ancient Peruvians in their approach to food and health.
Your journey continues to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll explore its ancient Inca city layout. Visit the religious, astronomical, and military structures that are part of this well-preserved site. Learn about the impressive engineering feats of the ancient Peruvians, who moved massive stones, some weighing nearly 60 metric tons, across the rugged landscape to construct these monumental structures.
Day 3

Tiered Pricing Explained
Our trips are budgeted for full or near-full sign-ups, which enables us to offer trips at the lowest possible price. Because of numerous fixed costs, it is more expensive to operate a trip for a small group. Therefore, on some of our trips, we use a tiered pricing system to avoid canceling a trip with a low number of sign-ups. We have found that most people also prefer this alternative to having a trip canceled.
Thus, you will note on our trip prices that there may be different rates for groups of 4-6 versus 7-12. We may initially invoice you at the higher tier price and refund the difference depending on the final group size. Trip costs are quoted based on foreign exchange rates current at the time of this printing. We reserve the right to raise the trip fee if there are exceptional cost increases beyond our control. Prices are based on double occupancy. If desired, we will strive to pair you with another single guest to eliminate the single supplement fee; however, please note that this is not always possible.

When is the best time to go on a Peruvian tour?
The best time to visit Peru depends on personal preferences. The peak tourist season is from June to August, which also corresponds to the driest months at Machu Picchu. For fewer crowds and a bit of rain, consider visiting in December or January. Keep in mind that while tours to Machu Picchu operate year-round, the Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance.
What are the accommodations like?
Peru offers a wide range of accommodations, from cozy family-run B&Bs to luxury hotels. Depending on your preferences and budget, we can book your trip in tourist, superior, or luxury hotels, all of which will include private bathrooms and showers.
What are the trip leaders like?
Our trip leaders are fluent in both English and Spanish and are locals of the regions they guide. They're passionate about sharing their knowledge of Peru and are excited to offer insight into their hometowns. Feel free to ask them anything, and if you have special requests, they’ll do their best to make it happen.
Do I need a visa to visit Peru?
Most travelers don’t need a visa to visit Peru. Visitors from many countries are granted a 90-day tourist stay upon arrival. However, all travelers must complete a tourist or embarkation card (known as a tarjeta de embarque), which is provided either on the plane before landing or at customs when you arrive in Lima. Be sure to keep this card safe during your trip, as you’ll need it when you leave Peru!
Are there any special events or festivals to look foward to?
Peru is full of celebrations! The country is known for its vibrant festivals, and you can experience some of the best, such as:
- Carnival (February): Fun fiestas across the country.
- Easter (March/April): Colorful processions, especially in Cusco.
- Inti Raymi (June): The exciting Inca Festival of the Sun in Cusco.
- Arequipa Week (August): Parades, fireworks, and folk dances.
- Festival of Spring (September): Traditional Marinera dancing.
- Lord of Miracles (October): Grand processions.
Keep in mind that these events can get busy, so it's a good idea to plan ahead!

All hotels provide a wonderful continental breakfast to start your day.

Will my cell phone work in Peru?
Yes, your cell phone can work in Peru, but there are a few considerations to ensure seamless connectivity during your trip.
Using Your Existing Phone:
Unlocking Your Device: Ensure your phone is unlocked, meaning it's not restricted to a specific carrier. This allows you to use local SIM cards.
International Roaming: Check with your current mobile provider about international roaming options for Peru. Some providers offer daily or monthly plans that include data, calls, and texts.
Purchasing a Local SIM Card:
Major Providers: Peru has several mobile operators, including Claro, Movistar, Entel, and Bitel. These providers offer reliable coverage and various prepaid plans suitable for travelers.
Where to Buy: SIM cards can be purchased at airports, shopping malls, and authorized stores throughout Peru.
Activation: Activation is typically straightforward, but ensure your phone is unlocked and compatible with the local network frequencies.
Alternative Options:
eSIM Services: Some services offer eSIMs for travelers, allowing you to activate a local number without a physical SIM card. However, availability and compatibility can vary, so it's advisable to research and confirm before your trip.
International SIM Cards: Companies like OneSimCard provide international SIM cards that work in multiple countries, including Peru. These can be convenient but may come with higher costs.
Wi-Fi Availability:
Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafes, and public spaces across Peru. However, having a local SIM card ensures you have internet access wherever you go, even in areas without Wi-Fi coverage.
What are the health risks in Peru?
Altitude sickness is a common concern when visiting the highlands, including Machu Picchu, but it can be managed by taking it slow, staying hydrated, and resting. Over-the-counter medication is available, and many hotels provide oxygen upon check-in. Guides can carry spare oxygen tanks for an extra fee.
A yellow fever vaccination is recommended for areas east of the Andes but not for Lima, Cusco, or Machu Picchu. Always check official health guidelines before traveling.
Is the water safe to drink?
Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink, but all hotels, vehicles, and restaurants provide drinking water. We recommend bringing a personal water filter, such as a LifeStraw, Grayl, Steripen, or Sawyer Squeeze, to help reduce plastic waste and stay hydrated during your trip.
What time is it in Peru?
Peru operates on UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) -5 hours.
What currency is used in Peru?
The official currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol (S/), commonly referred to as the "Sol." In cities like Lima and Cusco, you can also exchange Euros and US dollars into soles at many currency exchange locations.
What about electricity and outlets in Peru?
In Peru, electricity operates at 220 Volts and 60 Hertz. If you plan to use a 110-volt appliance, you'll need a power adapter. Most outlets in Peru accept US standard two flat blade plugs. Some larger hotels may have US-style sockets in their rooms, making it more convenient for travelers with certain devices.
