Itinerary
Day 1
Cabo Pulmo National Park
You’ll be met by your knowledgeable guide at the hotel for a short orientation before heading northeast to UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cabo Pulmo National Park. Established in 1995, it’s an excellent example of reef restoration and boasts one of only three coral reefs in western North America. Snorkeling here offers a unique opportunity to see 11 of the 14 coral species found in the Sea of Cortez, not to mention a diversity of marine life that include colorful fish, sea turtles, and dolphins. On return to land, we’ll head to the small town of Cabo Pulmo, which has transitioned from fishing to tourism in recent years.
Day 2
Explore Santiago and El Triunfo
After breakfast at your casita, we’ll drive an hour inland to explore the ranch-dotted rural scenes of Santiago, which stand in stark contrast to the desert landscapes that dominate much of Baja. Small creeks cascading from the Laguna de la Sierra mountain range run throughout the year, creating the perfect setting for hiking. Refresh in one of the swimming holes framed by large granite boulders and enjoy a picnic lunch on the creek banks before continuing towards the historic mining town of El Triunfo. Once you’ve checked into your accommodation, you’ll have time to explore the town on foot before reconvening for a delicious meal of local Mexican dishes.
Day 3
Silver Mine Exploration, San Antonio and on to LaPaz
Begin the day with an exploration of the historic El Triunfo silver mine whose 150-foot smokestack towers over the town. Learn about the smelting operations that were once conducted here before continuing on foot to the off-the-beaten-track town of San Antonio. Our route takes us through a variety of landscapes, with your guide pointing out the unique flora of the Baja peninsula along the way. After a couple of hours, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across San Antonio, which clusters around a pretty plaza.
Lunch will be had with a local family who will share their life experiences and local culinary traditions with you. In the afternoon, we’ll drive to the capital of Baja Sur, La Paz, with the city’s attractive Malecon serving as the heart of social activities. After checking into your hotel, you’ll have plenty of time to stroll along this waterfront walkway and soak up the local comings and goings.
Day 4
Whale Shark Snorkel
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll meet at the marina where your whale shark guide will be waiting for an experience you’ll never forget. Our boat will whisk you offshore where you’ll snorkel with these gentle giants who filter feed by straining the water for plankton and a variety of small invertebrates.
Enjoy lunch on board while recounting your experiences with the whale sharks as we return to La Paz. From here, we’ll begin the three-hour drive south to Cabo San Lucas or Cabo San Jose where your tour ends. If you have an early evening flight, transport can be provided directly to Los Cabos International Airport. Alternatively, you may wish to spend an additional night in La Paz and transfer to the airport the following day.
